As part of the Omnii-1 project, researchers used artificial intelligence to develop bacteriophages — viruses capable of selectively destroying specific bacteria without damaging human cells. Unlike broad-spectrum antibiotics, these viruses can target bacterial infections while preserving beneficial microflora. During laboratory testing, the AI-developed bacteriophages completely eliminated drug-resistant bacterial strains isolated from a real patient.
Following the laboratory experiments, the experimental treatment was administered to a critically ill patient, although the results have not yet been made public. Researchers emphasize that a single case is insufficient to establish the method's safety and effectiveness. Nevertheless, AI-assisted bacteriophage development could open up new opportunities for treating bacterial infections resistant to conventional antibiotics.
