Scientists at the University of Miami have unveiled an artificial intelligence system that helps locate unexploded ordnance. UAVs operate from the air, scanning the seabed, while the AI searches for shapes resembling ammunition.
The researchers managed to solve one of the major challenges in such projects — image blurring caused by water. To address this, they used NASA technologies: one removes optical distortions from images, while another illuminates the seabed using different spectral colors.
During tests in Florida, the system successfully detected all test targets, even when precipitation obscured visibility. In the future, the technology will make coastal surveys safer — eliminating risks to personnel, costly equipment, and even the need for shallow-water operations.
